This weekend 21st & 22nd January the club are sending a party of 12 2005’s & younger to compete in the annual Corrib Water Polo Club Junior tournament.
The competition will be held in Galway over the weekend & Watford will join 10 other Junior teams from across Ireland.
The team set off from Stansted Saturday morning at 9.00am & fly to Shannon airport & then travel to Galway for the tournament. The weekend’s event is split over two locations with Saturday’s games played at the Kingfisher Pool & then on Sunday to tournament moves to the Leisureland swimming complex.
The eleven competing teams are split into 3 groups of 3 & one group of 2. Watford drawn in Group 2 will play Clonard & Clontarf Water Polo Club’s B side.
The team open’s their campaign on Saturday afternoon against Clontarf B team who are one of the oldest Water Polo Clubs in Ireland having been formed back in 1884. Their next group game is against Clonard.
If the team can successfully negotiate their opening two matches & finish either 1st or 2nd in the three team group they will progress in to the quarter-finals were they will play against either the Runners-up of Group 3 (Tribes, Corrib B or Drogheda) or if they come second in Group 2 they will face the Winners of Grp 3.
Should the team then progress through the quarter-finals stage they will play a semi-finals match on Sunday morning against one of the teams from Grp 2 or 3 so it could work out that we play against one of our earlier Grp 2 opponents.
Should the team make the finals (fingers crossed) they will face one of the five teams from Grp 1 or 4 who have themselves successfully negotiated a route to the final.
The five other teams in the competition are:
Grp 1: Claremorris, Corrib A & St Vincents. Grp 4: Clontarf A & North Dublin.
On Saturday evening our young team will also watch a Men’s Irish National League Division One game as Corrib face Half Moon. Corrib currently sit (3rd) in the table & Half Moon (7th) and the home side need a win if they are going to catch current league leaders St Vincents who are five points clear at the top of the table.
Corrib this season have Watford’s 1st team Goalie & current GB International Peter Pickford in their ranks along with Ciaran Walsh & Corrib’s Goran Sablic plays for Watford BWPL 1st team so the links between the two clubs are strong & our young side will lend their vocal voices to supporting the home side.
