Watford 2nd’s start season with a win….

The Men’s 2nd team started their London League Div One campaign with a win over Avondale at Woodside last Sunday evening.

The game started with the team from Putney racing into a 2-0 lead after only 90 seconds play. Andy Holt halved the deficit 11 seconds later but neither side could find a way to add to their score and the quarter closed with Avondale 1-2 up.

The second period was a carbon copy of the first with the visitors racing into a 1-4 lead with another two goals after 1.56 mins play but that was the turning point for Watford as they first clawed they way back to level the match at 4-4 with goals from Jack Warman after a man-up advantage then a long range effort from Richard Hime & a shot from Danny Davis had the game all square. Watford then took the lead at 5-4 with a goal from Neil Haftel as he was given too much room from 5m to find the bottom corner of the net. Avondale responded when a shot looped up off the bar & dropped in front of their centre forward & he had the easy task of pushing the ball home to level the game again at 5-5. Half time soon followed.

HT Team talk by Coach Edi...

Following a tough half-time team talk from Head Coach Edi Brkovic the team came out more focused and with the defence shutting down the Avondale attack, the team soon took the lead when a shot from Steve Behr from the wing somehow deceived the  Avondale goalie to sneak in for 6-5. Further chances were missed before another goal from Davis gave his side a two goal advantage at 7-5.

The final period began with Watford extending their lead further to 9-5 with efforts from Holt & Hime. The game then fell into a period of attack and defend before with only 1.44 mins to play Avondale hit two quick goals to narrow the gap at 9-7 but with time ebbing away Watford held on to record their first win of the Summer season.
