With 2019 only a few days old the second half of British Water Polo season kicks-off this Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th January as our Men’s 2nd team the Saxons are in Championship Four action at Habs Boys School.
With the team finishing the first half of the season as Runners-up in Division Five they will now play seven further matches in phase two of the season with the aim to finish as one of the top three sides and with that gain promotion to Division Four for the start of the 2019/20 BWPL season that gets underway in Mid-September.
The seven sides that the Saxons will be battling with to gain promotion are British Army, Caledonia Storm, Coventry, Hucknell, Invicta Marlins, Leeds & Sheffield Dolphins.
On Saturday lunchtime we will start our push for promotion against Invicta Marlins and having already played them in the first half of the season and beating them 7-4 a repeat of this result will be just what Head Coach Edi Brkovic would have wished for in his New Year’s resolutions!!
Next up will be the British Army at 5.00pm on Saturday evening and again having played & beaten the Army side (12-7) in the first half of the season the team will be hoping for two wins from Day One.
On Sunday morning at 10.00am the team will face Nottingham side Hucknell who had a poor first half of the season winning only two games out of the seven played and these were against the two other relegated sides Coventry & Caledonia Storm.
So with a bit of luck we could finish the first Phase Two weekend with a couple or hopefully three wins which would set us up nicely for the next weekend at the end of January when the team travel to Liverpool to face Coventry and Leeds before the final weekend in late February at Marlborough College with two more games against Sheffield Dolphins & Caledonia Storm.
The Saxons squad for this weekend’s three matches is:
Chris Jones, Steve Brassington, Zac Corcoran, Richard Hime, Matt Irish, Craig Nichols, Alex Norcliffe, George Sadler, Luke Sperry, Matt Smith, Josh Silverbeck, Matt Molner, Alun Dorrington, Max Cohen, David Cai.
