Following the cancellation of the NAG’s semi-fiinals & Finals back in April due to the light bulb incident at the Liverpool Aquatics Centre which left broken glass on poolside & in the pool a new date was set for Bank Holiday Monday in Sheffield.
So it was that Watford’s U17′s & U19′s Boys teams had to make the long trip to Ponds Forge Sheffield for the semi-finals & Finals of both competitions.
Our U19′s were first in action in their semi-final against City of Manchester a team that has seven of their U19′s squad playing for their senior men’s side who recently won the British Water Polo League Super Fives so this was going to be a tough ask if we were to make the finals and so it proved as team lost the semi-final 11-6.
With our U17′s also losing their Semi-Final to the Manchesrer U17′s it was a Bronze medal opportunity for both sides for late evening on Bank Holiday Monday.
The U17′s were first to go for Bronze and they would face Nova Centurion’s and in an opening lively first quarter our boys edged it 4-3.
The second period was a very cagey quarter as both sides defended superbly but it was Watford who manged to extend their lead by one to reach half time 5-3 up.
The third period saw Nova turn the game on its head as they won the quarter 5-3 to lead going into the final period by one at 8-7.
The final period saw Watford level at 8-8 before Nova pulled away with two quick goals for 8-10 but with only a couple of minutes remaining Watford stepped up a gear and scored three unanswered goals to finish Bronze medal winners at 11-10.
A great team effort..
Our U19′s failed to beat City of Sheffield in the U19′s Bronze medal match but a fourth place finish in the National Age Groups is a great achievement for this squad as half the team can still compete next season due to their ages.
Sheffield took a first quarter lead 3-1 and maintain this two goal advantage by the end of the third period at 5-3. Watford’s goals coming via a double from Yalin Gulen and a Daniel Atkinson strike.
The final period saw Sheffield pull away with a convincing 3-1 quarter win to win the Bronze medal with an 8-4 victory, Atkinson scored Watford’s final goal.
Overall a great achievement for the Club in this season’s National Age Groups as our U15′s Boys won Bronze, our U19′s finished Fourth and our U17′s Girls finished top eight and U15′s Girls finished in top five in the country.
