The Watford U15′s ‘A” team won Silver on Saturday at the Manchester Aquatics Centre as the team finished runners-up to Worthing in this season’s National Age Group Championship.
Our A team drawn in Group D alongside City of Manchester B team & Devonport. The opening game of the group saw the team face Manchester and in an easy opener the team ran away winners 21-2. The next group game against Devonport who are made up of players from across the South West Region was far tougher as Devonport took an early 1-0 lead however the team soon got into their stride and ran in three unanswered goals to lead 3-1 mid-way through the second half however Devonport weren’t going to lie down and with two late goals they levelled the game at 3-3. With Devonport beating Manchester 19-0 Watford topped Group D on goal difference and advanced as group winners on the slender of margins.
As one of the six group winners Watford were now in a group of three along side Bristol & Sheffield. The team would need to finish in the top two ti advance to the semi-finals stage.
The first game against Bristol was a topsy turvy match as Bristol took a 2-0 lead before watford responded to level at 2-2. We then took the lead and increased this to 4-2. The scorers then moved on to 6-5 as each side responded to the other scoring but with the game moving into the latter stages Watford took a two goal advantage & hung on to win.
Next up was Sheffield & they took an early 2-0 lead but the team fought back to level & then take the lead at 3-2 but Sheffield levelled the game again and with the game coming to a close neither side could find the winner. A draw wasn’t the best result but it guaranteed us the Bronze medal play-off but with Bristol still to play Sheffield a win for Bristol would move us into the final & Bristol into the bronze medal match at the expense of Sheffield who would drop out. Sheffield lead Bristol at HT 4-3 but a brilliant second half saw Bristol win 7-4 & Watford were into the NAG’s Final.
The Final against South Coast side Worthing and with a number of regional academy players in their side they were just too good for Watford & ran out worthy winners at 10-2.
Assistant Coach Steve Chambers said after the Final –
“Its a great result for the club to get a Silver medal this is the highest position the club has ever achieved at U15′s level, Worthing were the better side so no shame in losing to them, we rode our luck at times with the two draws but overall it’s a great experience for the lads & they have room to improve for next season & go that one step further”.
Our B team also competed at Manchester & a young in-experienced team struggled to contain their stronger opponents but it was a worth the trip for this young side & will stand then in good stead for future competitions.
